Here I Am!

A little bit about me, my travels, and adventures in London. Enjoy!

Today I had to take some pictures of an octopus. They didn't really come out but I thought I would show you where I work. Here is the SeaLife Center. Note the moutains in the background. It has been foggy the past few days, so you can't really see the top. There is also still snow on top of the building. The black netting is for the aviary exhibit, which is open to the outdoors year round. Brrr! Ressurection Bay is to the left. The building is practically right on the water.

I actually work in another buidling, the Depot. It survived the tsunami and earthquake that devestrated much of Seward in the early 1900's. Ressurection Bay is to the right.

Finally, here is the view as I walk out my office door. Again, the clouds are pretty low today. We did have some gorgeous sunny days earlier this week!

As I have mentioned before, Tuesdays I am lucky enough to work in Rescue and Rehab. If you are interested in the Rescue and Rehab program here at the SeaLife Center, I would recomend becoming a member of the "Wildlife Rescue Team." You get monthly updates (that I write) on the animals, a picture of a particular animal of your choosing, a certificate, and a case history on the animal. The proceeds go towards the Rehab program. (They are in need for an industrial fish/meat grinder in case you have a spare on laying around. Those poor interns spend hours cutting up fish!)

Here are some of our latest admits- all harbor seal pups. This years theme for names is "Rocks and Minerals." These photos are copyrighted to the SeaLife Center, so please don't use them without our permission.

OK I get it. You want pictures. Here are some from our Intern Nocturne. We were able to sleep over at the SeaLife Center. The education interns had us to a scavenger hunt that was fun! We also played with bioluminessing ostrocods and watched "Swiss Family Robinson." I froze my tail off because I didn't have a sleeping. I was tempted to climb into Travis' since he was the closest person to me, but I toughed it out.

Yeah! I figured out how to upload the pix from the "good" camera I am borrowing from my friend Geoff. SWEET! This is from the whale watch Nicole and I went on 2 weeks ago. It is a humpback whale. I have many pictures to catch you up on- my first day in Seward, the Center, the whale watch. Unfortunately, it will have to wait until after my letter. Stay tuned though!

Sorry it has been so long. You know me, I like to stay busy.

Ok Tuesday night we had our second softball game. The other team forfeited because they were short on players. We ended up loaning them a few of our guys and scrimaging.

Wednesday night, we represented at the Yukon with kareoke. Travis and Tyler once again dominated the microphone. Jenny tried convincing me to sing, but I declined. I am thinking about "Magic Man" for my debut, but its a tough one!

Thursday night I worked at the hotel. The computers crashed. A party of 17 walked-in without a reservation looking for rooms. The cable wasn't working in someone else's room. It was hell! I had to go to the bar after work. Tyler met me for a cocktail.

Friday I stayed after work and scanned half of the photos I am using for my thesis. It felt good putting some time into my project. I borrowed a car from the center and stocked up on groceries. I am trying to go back to the eating and excerise habits I had before spring break (FLORIDA!). hmmm... frozen dinners. It is challenging to cook 3 meals a day for one person and not have it always be pasta or quesadillas. It reminds me of my semester in Woods Hole. Although I have cut back on the mac-n-chesse tremendously.

Saturday morning I went for a run before going to the hotel. Work went well, i.e. all the computers were working. As my friend Vicki used to say "Technology is only good when it works." Saturday night, a reggae band was playing at this cute resturant called Youly's. I met Tyler, Cathy, and the newest intern, Andrea, there. Tyler and I danced a bit. We went over to the Alehouse around midnight to play some songs in the juke box. Then we all went home.

Sunday was supposed to be my day off. My roommate, Nicole, and I were planning to take a 6 hour boat cruise. But my manager at the hotel wanted the day off for Fathers day, so I worked for her. It was a fairly calm afternoon. Turns out the weather got cold anyways, so a boat ride would have been brisk. Nicole and I went to dinner instead at Chrystos. We ran into some guys staying at the hotel and invited them to the Yukon for kareoke. Kareoke was a lot of fun. A few of the interns that rarely come out made a brief appearance. It was so good to see them!

Today I was back at the SeaLife Center. I am skipping softball practice so I can write a letter for emergency funds from MSU. Cross your fingers! Every bit helps. After I finish that, we are going over to Kathy's apartment for oriental chicken salad. Mine will be sans chicken.

This sounds totally blogger-cliche, but:

I'd like to give a big shout out to my mom, dad, Kristen, Geoff, Lisa, Courtney, and the virus lab at UR. I heard you guys have all been checking my blog regularly and I appreciate it! Feel free to leave me a comment sometime. Or send me cookies. Or magnets. Or a postcard.
