HOLY CRAP! I AM GOING TO ALASKA! As part of my degree program, I am required to participate in an internship. A labmate spent last summer at the Alaska Sea Life Center, working in their education department. I had heard of the ASLC before, and even have applied to job openings. So I was looking forward to applying for an internship for this summer. You are able to apply for 3 positions, and I chose: Marine Mammal Stranding, Lab Tech, and Fundraising. I had interviews with the latter two, and was offered the Fundraising position! I am set to work May 22 - August 14. I hope to send a few extra days up there and travel throughout the summer. The thought of exploring an entirely new ecosystem is unbelievable, and I don't think this will all hit me until I am on the plane, flying over glaciers.
The ASLC is in Seward, Alaska. It seems to be similar to Woods Hole- a small sea town in the winter with booming tourism in the summer. I am provided with housing (6 girls in a 2 bedroom apt I believe) and $75/week for food. (Unfortunately, no overnight visitors, so if you want to come and visit, we'll find a hostel or hotel for you) The committment is 40 hours a week. My position will end with a large fundraiser at the end of the summer.
How am I going to pack up all my shoes?
